Pessimists like to make the claim that they’re not being negative, but rather being realistic.
And, to be fair, studies have shown that pessimists are often more accurate than optimists…when describing a situation.
However, those same studies show that optimists are more effective at IMPROVING upon those situations. Pessimists are great at assessing circumstances, difficulties, and obstacles of a situation. But it’s the optimists that have the ability to brainstorm better outcomes and opportunities, and then put them into action.
It’s optimists that strike out on new adventures when the deck is stacked against them.
Optimists that start new businesses, even when the analysts tell them that most businesses fail within five years. New technology is invented by optimists and fire the engineers that tell them it’s impossible.
That’s why out of the billions of people who’ve occupied this planet, we remember names like Alexander the Great, Joan of Arc, The Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart, Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, and Oprah. Each of them had the hope and audacity to do what millions of people said could not be done. Elevating humanity and shaped the course of human history in the process.
It’s easy to get caught in a spiral of negativity and see the limitations of the world around you. However, don’t allow that to distort your vision or steal your dreams. You have the ability to acknowledge the difficulties within the current state of the world, and then work to make it better. It all begins with your willingness to see through the clouds, and get a glimpse of how bright things can be.
